Run/Walk For Life, specialises in getting you started even if your level of fitness is very low/non-existent. The scientific and computerised measurements recorded by each member after every session have shown that within as little as three to six weeks, you will be showing a definite increase in fitness levels and weight reduction, depending on your goals. You will also be less stressed and much more productive at work. Once you have joined, your fitness levels will be assessed, and you will be placed in a group according to your ability. The Run / Walk For Life programme is suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels and for pregnant women.

A major emphasis of the program is on fitness and weight loss through personal goal setting. Through the programme, you set your own personal goals, in consultation with our highly trained staff. Highly trained staff members create personal and customised training schedules to suit YOUR goals, which could be anything from weight -loss to intensive training or doing basic and gentle exercise with a group of other similar and friendly people. Your progress towards these goals is then scientifically monitored under close supervision Run/Walk for Life branches are managed by highly, and scientifically, trained franchisees, most of whom are ultra –marathon athletes.

Run/Walk for Life members exercise in supervised groups of similar ability, meaning that you will not find yourself being pushed too hard and battling to keep up with members who are fitter than you – similarly, you will not spend your exercise sessions having to wait for members who are slower than you – you will exercise with a group of members who are of similar ability and fitness to yourself. Founded by a medical doctor, Run/Walk for Life is South Africa’s leading fitness and weight loss program, and is the only exercise program of its kind to be approved by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of South Africa. As a program with very strong medical underpinnings, the medical benefits achieved by members on the program are astounding.   • 32 000 kilograms of weight lost
  • 900 members reduced cholesterol levels
  • 829 members reduced their levels of insulin dependence
  • 600 members reduced their dependence on blood pressure medication.

All members are screened for the risk of heart disease and undergo free monthly Blood Pressure and Body Composition measuring. Members’ progress is monitored by monthly computerized reports to ensure safe, productive exercise.

Founded in 1983, Run/Walk for Life is South Africa’s leading Health and Fitness Company, with over 100 franchises located throughout the country, in Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom as well as Zimbabwe.

Run/Walk for life was born out of an attempt to meet the needs of sedentary people, as well as to promote well being through exercise. Despite there being numerous athletics clubs and gyms catering for the needs of seasoned and already fit athletes, the exercise needs of unfit, overweight and/or unhealthy people were not well catered for. Before one could join your local running club or enter the gym, one had to get fit and into shape!!!! Run/Walk For Life was set up to cater for this huge group of people – those who are currently a little out of shape, want to get fit and shed a few kilograms, but feel uncomfortable and/or intimidated by joining the local gym or running club.

In 1983, Dr Ivan Cohen, a Medical Doctor was invited to head a research programme into running and the project was initiated with a series of published articles to recruit interested parties. Applicants had to be male executives, aged between 30 and 40 and had to have been sedentary for at least five years. The research subjects would run three times a week at specified times at one locality. The applicants had often led adverse lifestyles and were sedentary, obese, smokers and often had excessive alcohol intake and stress. They had a number of apprehensions about and lack of knowledge of exercise in general and running in particular; how to start, the required progression of distance, physical discomfort and boredom, self consciousness about physique or style, concerns about spending recreational time away from their families and fear of precipitating a variety of disorders - and so Run/Walk For Life was born – a programme through which each and every person could set their own goals, under highly-skilled trainers and set about achieving what they wanted to.

What has worked incredibly well is the constructive guidance to all members, many of whom have stayed with Run/Walk For Life long after achieving their first set of goals. Some have even tackled half-marathons, marathons and Comrades as their training, watched by our highly-trained staff, has been adjusted to accommodate their new levels of fitness.

Run/Walk For Life is owned by Matthew and Kim Grossett. Matthew was a provincial athlete for eight years based in Kwa-Zulu/Natal and held the provincial 400m hurdles record for three years. In keeping with the Run/Walk For Life, he joined up and managed only two and a half kilometres in his first Run/Walk For Life session, but since has run two Comrades and various other marathons and ultra-marathons. In addition, he finished in the top 50 of the toughest stage mountain biking event in the world, The Cape Epic. His work outside athletics has been varied, and since completing his Masters degree at Wits, he lectured there, published articles and books and went on to become one of the directors of FCB South Africa, one of South Africa’s largest advertising groups, which handled brands like Vodacom, Toyota, Shoprite and FNB.

Kim has a B. SC Physiotherapy degree from Wits and is a practicing physiotherapist. She has had her own successful practice for over 20 years and specialises in exercise science, all aspects of sports injuries and Orthopaedic manipulative therapy.

The Run/Walk For Life programme is a three-times-a-week exercise plan. This allows your muscles enough time to recover and reduces risk of injury. All the walking and running programmes suit any age or fitness level and ability, and promote weight loss, stress relief and many other medical benefits.

All memberships are for 6 or 12 months and can be paid in any number of ways: cash, credit card (straight or monthly budget facility), debit order, cheque or you may choose our post-dated cheque system. Once you have joined, your fitness levels will be assessed, and you will be placed in a group according to your ability.

The Run / Walk For Life programme is suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels and for pregnant women. For those who are already fit, Run / Walk For Life can offer advanced fitness training too (over 200 of our members ran Comrades last year). Sessions are three times a week and, during the first month (and dependant on your fitness level), last for up to 30 minutes.

Advancement up levels is gradual and according to a scientific formula, to ensure progress that is not too rapid, but similarly not to slow. Most beginners, who exercise on their own, often find it difficult to judge their pace and, as a result, may feel breathless or exhausted.

On our programme, you will be taught to count your pulse rate and monitor your breathing, so these problems will not be experienced. The scientific basis of the programme ensures that you stay comfortable, while receiving the optimum benefit from your exercise.

In short:

  • The Run/Walk For Life program will start you off on a level of running or walking which is relevant to your level of fitness.
  • You will exercise with people of similar ability to yourself. On joining, you will be put into a group of members whose fitness and ability matches yours
  • no more trying to keep up with fitter people or having to wait for less fit people than yourself;
  • All members are supervised and monitored by a qualified trainer/manager. You have your own personal trainer;
  • The intensity and duration of your exercise will be increased along scientific guidelines developed over the past 25 years;
  • All exercise groups exercise along pre-marked routes, under the supervision of road leaders – member security is a cornerstone of the program
